I Wonder… Which Cards Rhyme Together?

Materials:

• Photo cards of rhyming words (e.g., cat/hat, dog/log, sun/fun)

• Cards placed face down on a table or mat

Instructions:

• Introducing rhyming by modeling: “cat… hat… they sound the same at the end!”

• Lay all the photo cards face down and mix them up

• Children take turns flipping over two cards at a time

• Say the words aloud and ask: “Do they rhyme?”

• If the cards rhyme, the child keeps the pair; if not, turn them back over and try again

• Once the rhyming pairs are found, use the Powerful InterACTion questions to create sentences!

• What did you find?

• What do you see on your card?

• What is it called?

• Where have you seen that object/thing/feeling before?

• What does that object/thing/feeling remind you of?

• How do you know these two words rhyme? What do you hear at the end?
