Small baskets, bowls, or trays for sorting
A mat or table space
Optional: labels or pictures for categories
Instructions:
Place the kitchen utensils in a mixed pile on the table or mat.
Invite children to explore and observe the utensils first.
Ask children how they think the items could be sorted.
Children place utensils into different bowls or groups based on their chosen category.
Encourage children to explain their thinking and compare their groups with others.
Children can re-sort the items in a new way (by size, shape, colour, or function).
