Instructions:
Start by bringing Al to introduce the lesson by having him say “We’re going to talk about feelings today. Everyone look closely at your teacher’s face.
Display the emotion cards and invite children to identify feelings they are familiar with.
Play the game “Watch my face”. Hide behind your hands, reveal an exaggerated facial expression that shows a specific emotion, such as happy, scared, sad, mad, nervous, hurt, surprised, shy, brave, disappointed, etc. Invite the children to guess the emotion.
Play the game “Statues”. Ask the children to stand up, keep a safe distance from each other and explain that you will say a feeling and the “Statue!” to prompt the children to freeze and show that feeling. Demonstrate how to freeze and express an emotion with your face and body. Notice and describe the mouth, eye and eyebrow movements children make as they express different feelings.
Call out a feeling and say “Statue!” (e.g. “happy statue!” or “surprise statue!”). While playing, ask the children to look at how other children are expressing the feeling.
End by playing “Lots of feelings” for the kids to dance and sing along.
