Sound Wave Experiment

Instructions:

  1. Watch the video by pressing the play icon to learn how to set-up the experiment with sound waves.

    1. Tie the middle of a piece of yarn about 2 feet long to the tip of the handle of a spoon.

    2. Put the ends of the string over your ears (you can close your ears with the string on top) and bend over at the waist.

    3. With a pencil or something wooden hit the large part of the spoon that is hanging down (make sure it’s not touching anything)

  2. Listen!

  3. Try different types of string/yarn and different sized spoons.

  4. Upload your experiment to Flipgrid! Tell us what happens!

InterACTions:

  • Can you help me tie the knot around the spoon?

  • Do you know that sound travels in invisible waves? That’s why if something is between you and the sound it’s hard to hear! Let’s try talking with the door open, then let’s close it. What do you notice?

  • What do you hear? What if I try, can you hear the same sound when the string is not over your ear? What do you think about that?

  • Tell me about what you are wondering!
